Less than 2 months to go to the Big Cross Country Cycling Challenge
7th - 9th July - 170 miles from Morecambe to Bridlington! One of the main fundraising events for the Change Begins with a Bicycle project is the Coast to Coast Cycle Ride from Morecambe to Bridlington. Pete Bishop, his brother David and his son Daniel, being dubbed ‘The Three Bishops’, will be taking on this 170-mile challenge in the summer! We need your help to encourage and support them along the way, especially through sponsorship. Donations can be made through JustGiving, see link below, or alternatively sponsorship forms are available from Liz Bishop. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Elizabeth-Bishop7 Dear Friends With Easter comes hope and a chance for new beginnings. Indeed, new beginnings seem to be all around us in God’s creation. Perhaps, you too have noticed this and felt joyful as we’ve travelled ‘together’, whether walking or cycling, in our efforts to reach Butugaya. The Change Begins with a Bicycle project brings hope and new beginnings for those people living in some of the poorest communities in rural Uganda. It’s through this valuable work of All We Can, in partnership with FABIO (First African Bicycle Information Organisation), that dreams and hopes can start to become a reality. ![]() Methodist Women in Britain is 10 years old this year, having officially come into being at the Methodist Conference in 2011. In 1883 women in Manchester collected £32 for missionary work overseas from ‘Christmas pennies’ collected at family gatherings on Christmas Day. This became Easter Offering and is still collected today to make a large contribution to the Fund for World Mission. It is usual for the District President to choose a charity to raise money for during their term of office. I chose to support All We Can – formerly the Methodist Relief and Development Fund. As a Partner District, we elected that the money raised each year should go to a particular partnership that All We Can was focusing on for the year, in addition to ongoing work and responding in time of emergency. I was delighted to learn that the focus for 2020-2021 is bicycles for Uganda. Change Begins with a Bicycle is the title of the partnership and I hope that you have had an opportunity to see the material that All We Can have produced promoting this cause and how bicycles can change the lives of people in the poorest countries. I have witnessed this in The Gambia. I was fortunate to visit a Methodist school which a friend in another District had raised funds for during her time as District Network President. The fundraising didn’t stop and eventually 12 classrooms and a toilet block were built! A sight which will never leave me was of going into the compound of the senior school, which at that time was apart from where the building was taking place, and being confronted by a huge pile of bicycles under a very large tree. The head teacher explained that many of the children travelled several miles to get to school and if they didn’t have a bicycle then they would not be able to attend. When he needed to go to the other site he took a bicycle from the pile. He was eventually given one of his own and his delight and thankfulness was amazing. I do hope that you enjoy the various activities planned, and that your fundraising goes well. I am sure that every bicycle that is provided will make a difference to not just one person, but to whole families for school, going to market and many other activities. The Change Begins with a Bicycle project provides an opportunity to have a shared positive focus and to know that individually and together we can still make a difference. Through our project, we’ll be supporting the work of All We Can, in particular the Change Begins with a Bicycle project based in Butugaya, Uganda. It’s through their links with FABIO (First African Bicycle Organisation), that they are able to help some of the poorest communities in rural Uganda – improving access to education, healthcare and market. And it all begins with the humble bicycle! To find out more about Change begins with a Bicycle follow this link to our new bike project pages. ![]() There has been a MURDER…. On the 1st August the circuit staff and stewards alongside their families were invited to take part in the Great British Bump Off, Murder Mystery on Zoom! 10 Characters, including Cherry Cake, Ted Pudding and Pru Vingbag to name a few, coming from all around the country to see who killed Shaw G. Pudding, the stand in judge whilst Paul Hollywood is away. He ended up with a knife in his back but who had done it! This Murder Mystery was organised by a small group of staff and stewards, looking at how we could do a few more fun things online. The small groups including Sue Taylor, Suzanne Bridges and Hilary Deakin. In those conversations we talked this idea of running a Murder Mystery, however we hadn’t done this online, so rather that trying it out on you… we tried it on staff and stewards! There were a lot of laughs during the evening especially at accents and some of the things that might not have gone quite so well. But after a couple of hours, some delicious looking homemade cake (it is a bake off!) and some great detective work, people pointed their finger at which character they thought was capable of murder. The reveal was made. Around 1/3 of people got the correct murderer, congratulations to them! The plan going forward with this is to gain feedback and have a look at how we might run the evening going forward. If that is all positive and we think we can run a murder mystery online, you will be invited to take part. So keep an eye out if this sounds like an interesting activity for you to do. Chris Mason
