Food for Thought

Read the Bible passage Mark 1:14-19 - Jesus calls the four fishermen.

Jesus begins his ministry by the water’s edge on the shore of Lake Galilee. The first thing he does is start to call his team together. The men in our story were simple fishermen but were men of faith. Maybe they had heard about Jesus as he was ‘new news on the street’ and was getting quite a following (verse 14). However it was only after they had listened and talked with Jesus themselves (v 16) that they were prepared to join the team and become committed disciples .

Questions to Ponder

1. What were your first impressions of Jesus when you became a Christian?

2. What appealed to you most about being a friend of Jesus and would that still apply now?

3. Jesus promised the fishermen  blessings galore (verse 17)  when they followed him. Does Jesus always live up to our expectations?

4. Does Jesus still call people to follow him in simple faith? Have his methods changed over the years and what sort of call from Jesus do you think would appeal to people in our modern world/church?

Hymn

Hear the call of the Kingdom
Lift your eyes to the King
Let His song rise within you
As a fragrant offering
Of how God rich in mercy
Came in Christ to redeem
All who trust in His unfailing grace

Hear the call of the Kingdom
To be children of light
With the mercy of heaven
The humility of Christ
Walking justly before Him
Loving all that is right
That the life of Christ may shine through us

King of Heaven we will answer the call
We will follow bringing hope to the world
Filled with passion filled with power to proclaim
Salvation in Jesus' name

Hear the call of the Kingdom
To reach out to the lost
With the Father's compassion
In the wonder of the cross
Bringing peace and forgiveness
And a hope yet to come
Let the nations put their trust in Him
